I’m Celebrating My Birthday, But I Have a Wish for You

Last week, while I was scrolling through Pinterest, I came across a message that caught my attention. It read,

“Heal my mother in all the places she hurts that I don’t know about. - a daughter’s prayer” - 3am thoughts

This message resonated with me for a few reasons. Firstly, those of you who know me are aware of the relationship I have with my mother. And although we are close and share our aspirations, concerns, disappointments, fears, and pain, I realize the probability of her carrying some hurts she hasn’t uttered to another sole. In my realization of this, I admit I have some, too.

Secondly, last month a colleague ended her life. I don’t know her reasons, but it is apparent to me that she determined death was the better choice for what she was facing. This occurrence made me realize the importance of inquiring about how my family and friends are doing. I’ve carried hurts that I haven’t shared and I am concerned about others I know who may be facing challenges they view as insurmountable.
