Should I Be Pursuing Happiness or Contentment?
Late last year, I bought a t-shirt that read, “Do more of what makes you happy.” I was drawn to it mainly because it is colorful, but I also liked the message. When I purchased it, I considered myself to be “unhappy” mainly because of the job I had. I viewed it as “unfulfilling” and “unsatisfying.” I contemplating pursuing a different career—specifically, content creation or writing. I wondered if the change would ignite the joy I believed I was lacking. I also asked myself if I should make changes in my life in the pursuit of happiness, or if I should be content in the state that I am in. I questioned if happiness was real, and if so, would it be best to seek it or exercise contentment? These thoughts brought a familiar scripture to the forefront of my mind:
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” Philippians 4:11 KJV
After pondering over all of those questions and thoughts, I decided it would be wise to emulate the Apostle Paul. Which will you pursue?…T.V.
